Last weekend I made my first solo venture and overnight camping trip. Bittersweet is the best way to describe it. I sang at the top of my longs in my car, I made up epic rap songs (epic I’m sure only to me), and it was nice to get to do whatever I wanted but also a little lonely at times. Not having someone to help with directions and navigation was also an adventure… and it is truly a miracle that I didn’t get stranded or completely lost.
The Trona Pinnacles are one of the most magical and unusual geological wonders of the California Desert. Famous for footage in several movies like Planet of the Apes, Battlestar Galactica and Lost in Space, these formations are such a wonder to see as they go from large looming shadows in the distance to beautiful pinnacle monuments as the sun begins to rise.
This was definitely one National Landmark I am so glad to have stumbled upon during my research on Death Valley (final destination) and I would highly recommend an overnight camping trip out near these formations.
The site is definitely off of the beaten path, and will take you about 30 minutes down a dirt road on BLM land to get to, with limited resources, no campfires permitted and no real campsites to speak of, but this ended up being one of the best views I have ever woken up to, and it really made me remember just how diverse and absolutely stunning all of California’s landscapes are.
